Short-Term or Temporary Medical Insurance plans are for individuals and families that need comprehensive coverage, but for some short-term, or temporary situation. For example, between jobs, following graduation from school, before full-time employement and benefits become available, or as a COBRA alternative.
The period of coverage can range from 30 days up to a full year with some plans.
Fortunately, these plans are often less expensive than comparable "permanent" individual or group plans.
You may choose from different deductbiles and coinsurance options, as well as the period you need the coverage: a fixed period of time (lowest cost) or, for more flexibility, month to month.
A Great "COBRA Alternative"
Today, one of the most common needs for short-term coverage is when you are between jobs, or following a lay-off. In fact, where there are no significant pre-exisitng medical conditions, this kind of coverage is an excellent low-cost alternative to expensive COBRA continuaton of coverage from a former employer. But be aware: these policies DO NOT cover pre-existing conditions, and the policy will expire at some point, usually after six or twelve months. If you have developed a serious medical condition during that time, and do not have a group plan to roll into, you may not be able to qualify for new coverage, and it will be too late to take COBRA.. Please be sure to discuss any concerns with me (Jim Archer) or a qualified insurance advisor.
The good news: Short-term coverage from quality carriers can be very comprehensive, quality coverage, very easy to get, and can be issued literally OVERNIGHT by applying online (see link for quotes/apply at the top of this page).
There are several carriers that offer short-term medical plans. However, I have never found one over-all better than Assurant Health. In fact, there is a reason they are the largest issuer of these plans in the USA. They offer a wide range of options for deductbiles and coinsurance. And when you choose to use their PPO network (it's not required), you'll enjoy immediate savings with network provider discounts.
When you apply, you'll have a choice of purchacing coverage for the exact nunber of days you'll need (this is the lowest cost way to go if you know just how long you'll need it), or for more flexibility, you can keep it month-to-month for about a 20% higher premium. If you choose to do monthly, be careful not to be late on your premiums: there is only a ten-day grace period if you don't set up automatic premiums by bank draft or credit card.
